The "Queens" of the Road in Georgia. Your way from Tbilisi to Svaneti.

If you're travelling  to Georgia you can’t miss visiting the Svaneti region, almost 500 km driving distance from Tbilisi. The beautiful highest mountain region of Georgia, Svaneti attracts visitors with its nature, history, people, traditions, food and architecture.

You can choose to go to Svaneti in a day or explore destinations by having an overnight on your way . Our suggestion for travelling to Svaneti is in favor of later as by this way you will have less tiring trip and will be able to visit all the historical and cultural destinations instead of just seeing them from the window of your car.

Sweet bread (Nazuqi) you can taste near village Surami (abt. 100 km from Tbilisi) on the way to Svaneti

After exploring all highlights on the way to Svaneti like Uplistsikhe cave city, second largest city of Georgia - Kutaisi with its Bagrati Cathedral (XI c, UNESCO) and Gelati Monastery (XII c, UNESCO), maybe visiting Sataplia caves and Martvili canyon, Dadians castle in Zugdidi, After trying Georgian sweet bread Nazuqi  there’s one more thing that attracts attention of travelers… Those are  “The queens of the roads of Svaneti” as  locals call them.

In Svaneti like in any other mountain regions the main farm activity is livestock, cattle care.  During your trip you will see herds of sheeps passing the road or lazilly feeding on the hills of mountains (don’t try to get near them as they are always accompanied by their herding dogs) .

Owners usually let their cows and even pigs walk freely during the day as they always find their way back home in the evenings. Because of this on the way you can see  a  few cows lounging around right in the middle of the road without a care in the world  and acting as if they are the ones owning the road and don’t even bother to look at you while you drive past them. Also don’t be surprised if you see them running around on the hills  or if they race past you  down to the steep hills. It's just them having an ordinary walk.

The sight of the animals  owning the roads never fails to bring a smile to the faces of travellers .
