A solitary tower built on a large rock by the river is the final part of a tragic love story.
According to the legend, Which is often mentioned as the story of Romeo and Juliet of Svanti , in the village Ipar lived a beautiful Mirangula, a single child of the rich family whose mother died early in her childhood so she was raised by her father as a shrine icon.
In the same village lived Beshken, famous for his courage and bravery, he was a good hunter, faithful to traditions, distinguished and respected. They met each other at one of the mountain holiday celebrations and Mirangula quickly fell in love with Beshken at first sight.
The feeling was so strong that she couldn't hide her emotions so her father noticed it and once when they returned home he asked her the reason for her distress. Mirangula did not hide her feelings for Beshken from her father and also added that either she would become Beshken's wife or no one’s.hearing this her father was livid as it turned out Beshken was married with kids.
His reasoning that it was not allowed to have such feelings for a married man was ignored by his daughter as she was consumed with love for Beshken. Enraged father decided to go and punish the man for disturbing and messing up his daughter's mind.
He found Beshken in the forest kneeling with his back facing him. As attacking someone from the back was considered as unmanly behavior Mirangula’s father offered him to get up and to fight him.Hearing this Beshken looked up at the man and said “ Just look at me, I’m in exact situation as her, I’m in love with her and my suffering is so much worse”.
Witnessing this forbidden love, the shocked father gave up and went back home but Beshken, to take his mind from the pain, went on a hunt which was dangerous even for an experienced man like him. In the end Instead of Mirangula's father, it was nature that punished Beshken - he slipped his foot on the ice, fell down the hill and died. Upon learning of this story, Beshken's wife Darina arrived at the scene of her husband's death and committed suicide
Mirangula refused to believe the death of her beloved. She asked her father to build a tower by the river looking at the way Beshken went. She spent her life living in the same tower alone and waiting…
Mirangula Tower stands strong, amazes the guests of Svaneti and immortalizes the name of Mirangula and the story of the Svan love triangle.
