Dariali Gorge and Georgian Military Highway - the Main Bridge Between South and North Caucasus.

During the mount Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church one day tour the travelers have many interesting destinations to visit. Traveling along the Georgian Military Highway one can explore  Ananuri Fortress and Jinvali Lake, Gudauri Ski resort and Jvari Pass (2.400 m). Dariali Gorge, spread along the river Tergi is one of the main attractions of the Kazbegi tour.

Dariali gorge located on  Georgian Military Highway between Stephantsminda (Kazbegi) and Georgian - Russian border. 11-kilometre long gorge is carved by the river Tergi through the Greate Caucasus steep rocky mountains. The name Dariali originates from the Persian word "Dar-i-alan" and means  "Gate of Alans".  Alans were nomadic tribes of the North Caucasus. Gorge was mentioned in records by famous geographers: Strabo, Ptolemy, and Pliny calling "Porta Caucasiace" (Caucasus gate) and "Porta Hiberiar" (Iberian gate).

The Dariali pass has been a historically significant road, crossing the Great Caucasus mountain range connecting South and North since the ancient time. Georgian Military Highway was one of the branches of Silk Road, Dariali was a part of this legendary road, where the caravans from various countries moved between Asia and Europe. Dominance over Dariali gorge was of great importance in the foreign policy of Georgia, the Roman Empire, the Arab Caliphate, and Byzantium. It was a protecting barrier, to keep the Northern tribes from invading the land to the South.

According to the legend, the first fortress in Dariali was built by the Iberian king Mirian in the first half of the II century BC. During the Roman invasion of Georgia I century BC, the gorge was controlled by the Kingdom of Iberia. In the 5th century, Iberian king Vakhtang Gorgasali rebuilt the old fortress.  While the Arabs ruled in the Transcaucasia in VII-X centuries, the Dariali gorge and fortress were in their hands. In the X-XIII centuries the role of the Dariali gorge increased, by this way Georgia had political, economic, and cultural relations with the countries of the Northern Caucasus.

In the XIII century, after the Mongol invasions, the economic importance of the Dariali road fell, but in the first half of the XVIII century, after Russia became interested in the south Caucasus, the role of Dariali increased again. Political, diplomatic, and military missions passed through Dariali. The narrow road made access to the gorge difficult and dangerous, notably in the winter, after the construction of the Georgian military highway, the movement on the gorge's road has become regular and intensive.

In 2002 by the initiate of catholic-patriarch Ilia II, close to Georgian-Russian border, began the construction of monastery complex and completed in 2011. The domed style church of Arch Angel is the biggest between the 12 churches of the complex. The monastery is a gateway to Georgia. All visitors who will cross the border could easily recognize that they have arrived in orthodoxy Christian and country.
